Lossless compression has begun to be adopted by companies all across the audio industry and the sound recording industry is no exception. Field recording provider Sound Devices who is popular in the taping and live show recording community is adding FLAC support to the latest firmware update for their 7 series recorders. With the implementation of FLAC the 7 series recorders gain the ability to record FLAC compressed audio to local storage while maintaining all file metadata. This is a enormous jump from the previous MP3 format that was used. Once the audio is recorded as a FLAC file in the field a software utility will allow the conversion of files back to the industry-standard Broadcast Wave format.
