“The CD Is Dead”

CD is Dead

The CEO from EMI has made some interesting comments regarding the state of CD’s. CEO Alain Levy was quoted as saying “The CD as it is right now is dead” and goes on to state that “You’re not going to offer your mother-in-law iTunes downloads for Christmas,” he said. “But we have to be much more innovative in the way we sell physical content.” The plan is to start adding additional content to CD’s to motivate buyers to purchase a CD over downloading it.
As usual there is an interesting discussion going on over at Slashdot regarding these comments as well as some interesting blog posts. What this means for the lossless community is not clear. It could be a great thing spurring on large record companies to offer a wider offering of formats for download but my guess is that they’ll try everything else before broadening the range downloadable formats.
